Miami, Fl, July 21, 2016–The National LGBTQ Task Force is strongly condemning the North Miami police’s gun attack on Charles Kinsey, a Black man and caretaker, who was caring for an autistic man when he was shot. A video of the incident shows Kinsey lying on his back on the ground with his hands up in the air when police shot him.
“The North Miami police’s outrageous gun assault on an innocent caretaker Charles Kinsey, a Black man, is yet another example of the apparent shoot-to-kill policy against Black men that is endemic in policing across the nation. Thankfully Mr. Kinsey is recovering from a leg wound in a hospital and the autistic person he was caring for is ok. The same can’t be said for Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the numerous other victims of deadly police violence. It’s time for radical reform of the criminal justice system in America — away from one that was originally designed to control black lives after slavery to one that is grounded in the fundamental principle that Black lives matter,” said Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.
